Why We Built Our Own Attribution System

Sean McNamara

We got tired of marketing tools that take credit for everything and hand you a number you cannot trust. So we built Scout Recon: attribution for law firms, measured honestly, from the first touch to the signed matter.

For years, the most uncomfortable moment in any marketing conversation was the same. A firm would ask, reasonably, “So which of this is actually working?” And the honest answer was usually some version of “we think so, probably, here is a number that points in the right direction.”

That was not good enough. Not for the money firms spend, and not for the standard we hold our own work to. So we built the tool we wished existed. We call it Scout Recon, and this is why it exists.

The problem with most marketing reports

Most attribution tools have a quiet conflict of interest. They are built by the same people running the ads, and they tend to take credit for everything they can. A lead clicked an ad once, three weeks before they called? The ad gets the win. A number goes up and to the right, everyone nods, and nobody can actually trace it to a signed client.

The result is a report that feels good and tells you very little. You cannot make a real budget decision on a number you cannot trust. And in legal marketing, where a single matter can be worth more than a month of ad spend, guessing is expensive.

What we wanted instead

We wanted to follow a potential client the whole way: the click, the call, the intake conversation, and whether it ever became a signed matter inside the case system the firm already uses. We wanted to see the funnel as it really is, not as a dashboard wishes it were.

And we wanted it reported honestly. That means performance shown in rates and proportions, never inflated dollar totals we claim to have “won” for you. When Recon shows a dollar figure, it is what moved through the platform, tracked, not revenue we are taking credit for. That distinction matters for more than honesty. Law firms answer to advertising rules, and a tool that overclaims becomes a liability rather than an asset.

Battle-tested before we shipped it

We built Recon against real campaigns and real intake data, and tested it hard before we put it in front of anyone, because the only way to trust a measurement tool is to live on it first. That is still how we work. If a number would not survive a hard question from a managing partner, it does not ship.

What it actually does

In plain terms, Scout Recon connects the pieces that usually live in separate silos: your website and ads, your call tracking, and your CRM. Then it lines them up so you can see which channels start real cases, compare how different attribution models assign credit, watch your visibility in AI search results, and trace each signed matter back to where it actually came from.

It is the proof layer under everything we do. When we tell a firm a channel is working, Recon is how we know, and how they can see it for themselves.

Where it stands

Recon is built for law firms first, and for the agencies that run marketing for them. We are launching it deliberately, onboarding each account personally, because it gets set up on your own systems and we would rather do that right than fast.

If you want to see what your marketing is really doing, request a demo and we will walk you through it on real numbers. In the next post, I will get into how the measurement actually works.
