How We Actually Measure What Your Marketing Is Doing

Joy McNamara · June 24, 2026 · 3 min read

The short version

A plain-English look at how Scout Recon follows a potential client from the first touch to a signed matter, why we report in rates instead of dollars, and what "closed-loop" really means.

In the last post I explained why we built Scout Recon. This one is about how it actually works, in plain terms, without the dashboard jargon. If you have ever wondered how anyone can honestly say “this channel produced that client,” this is the answer.

It follows the whole path, from click to signed matter

Most tools stop at the click. Recon keeps going. It connects four things that usually live in separate places: how someone found you (your website, ads, organic search, AI answers), the phone call or form that followed, the intake conversation, and finally whether it became a signed matter in the case system your firm already uses.

Lining those up is the whole game. A click is not a client, and neither is a phone call. A signed matter is, and that is the only endpoint worth measuring against. By following the path all the way to the end, Recon can tell you which front-door channels actually start real cases, instead of which ones just generate motion.

Why we report in rates, not dollars

Here is the part that makes Recon different, and it is a choice, not a limitation. We report performance in rates and proportions: answer rate, the share of calls that become consults, the share of consults that become matters, which channels start what percentage of cases. We do not hand you a big revenue number and claim our marketing “won” it for you.

When you do see a dollar figure in Recon, it is labeled for what it is: pipeline that was tracked through the platform, not revenue we are taking credit for. That honesty is partly principle and partly necessity. Law firms answer to advertising rules, and a number that overstates what marketing did is a problem waiting to happen. Rates tell you the truth about where the funnel is strong and where it leaks, which is what you actually need to make a decision.

Comparing models instead of picking a convenient one

Attribution is not one number, it is a point of view. Give all the credit to the first touch and organic search usually looks like the hero. Give it to the last touch and direct or paid often jumps. The truth lives in between.

So Recon shows several models side by side: first touch, last touch, linear, time decay. Seeing how a channel’s share shifts across models tells you far more than any single model could. A channel that looks strong only under the model that flatters it is a channel to watch. One that holds up across all of them is one to trust.

AI search is the new front door

More people are starting their search inside AI answer engines, and that is becoming a real way potential clients find firms. Recon measures how often you show up in those answers over time. To be clear about what that is: it is visibility tracking, a measurement of presence, not a promise that we can rank you in an AI answer. Anyone who promises that is selling something. We measure it so you can see a trend most firms cannot see at all yet.

What “closed-loop” really means

You will hear “closed-loop” thrown around a lot. Here is the plain version: the loop is closed when a signed matter can be traced all the way back through intake to the channel that first brought that person in. Open-loop reporting stops at the lead and hopes. Closed-loop reporting connects the signed matter to its origin, so the report is about cases, not clicks.

That is the number worth trusting, and it is the one most tools never actually deliver.

See it on your own numbers

This is easier to understand when you are looking at a real funnel instead of reading about one. If you want to see what your marketing is really doing, request a demo. We set up each account personally, walk you through your own numbers, and show you exactly where the cases are coming from.
